The 2016 Census Program includes the Census of Population and the Census of Agriculture. The first census in what is now Canada took place in New France in 1666, under the direction of Intendant Jean Talon. The census is a reliable source designed to provide information about people and housing units in Canada by their demographic, social, economic characteristics and agricultural operations.
