Alan Fleming’s CN symbol and J.D.’s Canada wordmark were among cases that brought greater attention to this matter and changed how design and typography in Canada were regarded for all time. The design was sound enough that it’s still being used today. As I mentioned in my earlier email to Jim (before you posted this comment), I noticed that both Ralph Tibbles and your uncle claim credit for this design.

Thinking back, the ATF Baskervile typeface was the “Mateuse Rosé” of Typefaces at the time.

Composition: The Arms of Canada signature is composed of one colour and the approved applied title in both official languages. I designed the Canada logo while working at McLaren Advertising on a campaign for the Canadian Government Travel Bureau.

Thank you for this great info about the most iconic symbol that any government ever had, however, I have a question for the author of this logo. According to the post above, it sounds like Grant Johnson himself has given credit to Donoahue, though I cant understand why the author of iconica has given such a strong credit to the wrong person. When you create the Logo, did you do all the specs it has now days?

Nor does he have to add a piece from another designer to his outstanding body of work. The flag looks cramped—too jammed in, it sits like an adult in a child’s chair, our poor flag needs room to breath. Ralph did it.Enough. All rights reserved. The design remains fresh over 40 years later and its application continues to expand. We’d love to clear this up and make sure that the design is credited properly, but since both men are well respected designers and both worked at McLaren in the sixties, it’s not clear cut. Mr. Tibbles applied the logo to signage and produced a style manual and, I’m sure, used it effectively in many applications.

The logo was designed in 1966 to be the signature for Canada’s Centennial Ralph Tibbles did not create it. The Government of Canada (Gouvernement du Canada in French), is the federal administration of Canada.
