Eliza’s character, throughout other works (like say, a certain musical), has been depicted as loyal and loving. Mazzeo imagines the unseen interactions between Eliza and her family in ways that can never be proven, and while this brings these historical figures to life, it also leaves space for her to tell half truths and project the narrative the author wants to tell. I can honestly see myself rereading this book again and again. And oh my God, I am so glad that I did. I was so excited to think that at last there would be a biography of Eliza Hamilton. I love Hamilton. I’ve seen plenty about Eliza’s relationship with her husband and sisters, but this book gave me a much more complete picture of her life. I give the author a lot of credit, Tilar J. Mazzeo seems to really know Eliza. I was very excited to read I, ELIZA HAMILTON, a book that promises "behind the most timeless of heroes stands an exceptional heroine." "Aaron Burr was famously louche and horny." Eliza remains loyal to Hamilton (and her family) & that is as in character for her as anything else. Mrs. Reynolds, who vehemently denied the affair, was willing to submit to a handwriting comparison in an attempt to clear her name. Nothing actually wrong with either one, except that I found sentence structures like this gave me pause on almost every page. When I first read it, I thought that it was perhaps dealt with too quickly, but it is also told through Eliza’s eyes. This is a hard one to rate, simply because I almost feel like it should be under historical fiction rather than Biography. The research is sloppy and the fictionalized additions by the author don't add to the book's credibility. Behind closed doors, she astutely manages their expanding household, and assists her husband with his political writings. So, I felt like I was reading a less thrilling version of that. The book arrived in excellent condition and was well packaged. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38532153, I requested this book from my library mid December thinking this wouldn’t become available until sometime mid-February. All in all, some speculation, within reason, can certainly be forgiven in the service of crafting a fleshed-out image of a woman so long lost to history. We get to see Eliza’s first impressions of Alexander, as well as her position in society, family home, and her stance on the war that was currently taking place during that time. I'm not sure this book is actually about Eliza Hamilton. The author states that she is not a historian; this is the truest thing she's written in the entire book. While that is not wrong, it is certainly not enough to truly depict what a remarkable American heroine Eliza Hamilton was. We all know that she had to forgive him his mistakes because hey, if she didn’t, she wouldn’t have spent those fifty years in perpetual mourning for him and constantly trying to share his legacy. Book Lover A strong pioneer woman, a loving sister, a caring mother and, in her later years, a generous philanthropist, Eliza had many sides. Was Alexander simply a cheating husband or was the whole affair a cleverly crafted ruse to cover up the illegal financial activities of which he was suspected at the time? The part about the letters got me intrigued… Wonder what are they trying to hide… Hmmmm… ( Log Out / I think it depends on who I’m reading about and why. There are very few negative things to say about Scott’s latest masterpiece. The world slave is mention a time when Eliza and Hamilton are married and they both decided to not own any. Change ). The spotlight on Eliza’s early life was incredibly interesting to me. I hardly ever cry and novels and their final farewell made me sob because it was just so powerfully written. While it’s nice to have the perspective of Eliza and what was going on at home for Alexander there are many times where the read has to ask “how would this author know that?” This would be fine except for her main theory on the Reynolds Pamphlet. Also, the theory the author raises around the Maria Reynolds scandal is interesting. There are a few rather strict prerequisites I have in place with respect to reading historical fiction, especially historical romance. The book goes into detail about Eliza’s involvement in founding New York’s first private orphanage, as well as her involvement in public education. And history is not a monolithic, black and white study. Mazzeo imagines the unseen interactions between Eliza and her family in ways that can never be proven, and while this brings these histo. But this is not a biography. It seemed both an instant, and an eternity, with the only certainty being that I did not wish it to end,” her clear admiration and respect for both her characters and the actual people she based them on, plus the extreme emotional roller-coaster of both joy and gut-wrenching sadness that I felt while reading this has made it clear to me that this is one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time. Ms. Mazzeo presented some material that challenged the narrative presented in the musical, and while I'm not sure I agree with her interpretation, I appreciate that it broadened my understanding of the Reynolds affair. I was worried when I saw reviewers, upset over one of the conclusions the author drew, slamming this book as poorly researched. And my favourite of all the characters is Eliza. Secondly, the portion of the book about Eliza’s life post-Hamilton. I hope somewhere there is a scholar writing a better biography of her remarkable life, because I eagerly await being able to read it.
