Fascinating characters and a really good story are combined to make this most interesting of books. Other reviewers have said that the nursing scenes in dementia and rehab wards were grossly unfair on nursing staff. Whether or not this is a realistic portrayal of someone with Asperger's is by-the-by as far as I am concerned. Can't wait to read more from this fresh, original and inspired author. This is the only time I have awarded 5 stars to a modern thriller. But as Patrick learns one truth from a dead man, he discovers there have been many other lies closer to home.

Once I’d made it through the resolution, I found the future for Patrick more than a little disappointing. This novel is astounding in many ways. For a cruel second she almost demanded Pride and Prejudice from him, but pushed it aside with an inner giggle. But no one hears what he does, and no one understand when he tries to tell them.
The writing is solid and does not get in the way of the story, and the plot moves steadily and take us along this character's path of growth and discovery. Bauer (Blacklands) brilliantly captures both the horror and helplessness of Sam's being mentally alive in an unresponsive body, as well as the mystification Patrick suffers in virtually all dealings with others.
It is set in Wales, I believe, so the names and slang sound British.

This book is easy to read, well-written with clever humour, and an off-beat attitude to many everyday things which is appealing and sometimes arresting. Patrick rolled on to his back, his breath suddenly shallow and his stomach fluttering with tension.

Extremely original, a whole new approach in a murder mystery. The lead character is fascinating and the plot twist totally unexpected.

If nothing else, your readership proves that there is a market and demand for autistic characters to be featured in books. A complete rethink in the layout of a crime story. This story is more about a young man coming to terms with his existence than about a mystery as such, though the unknown adds a rich flavor to the personal story of growth. He held his twisted thumbs up to the dark ceiling and thought again of the delicate blue veins in the backs of Lexi’s hands.
