slingshot rally

The sport has moved on since the Rally’s main heyday and now even relatively inexperienced riders are starting to ride surfboards and even hydrofoils.

Sizes Available: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14m There’s no travel guard or below the bar hand swivel but the quick release is compact and keeps a large amount of throw travel within reach of the rider.
Some man-handling needed in strong winds, but the nature of this kite is to help riders progress easily in normal conditions.

On the water the Rally GT is eager and quick, combined with plenty of power. While testers liked the smaller diameter grip and raised volcano at the insert to avoid pinched fingers, testers also commented on the thin rubber lines along the grip and how they make for a very solid grip. For jumping, the Rally’s hybrid delta shape provides long, lofty airs that are great for staying under control and landing gently regardless of how high you go. KW LIKED: A really brave move by Slingshot to step away from one of their most successful kites, but the GT is a much more manageable kite to help intermediate riders progress through kiteboarding’s spectrum of riding styles.

You could run this kite over and it would still maintain its shape, which is typically Slingshot. They say the GT is their most jack-of-all-trades kite, taking riders from the learning phase all the way up to perfecting their tricks.

The Rally can be a great option for foilboarding with a bit more pull but generally will take a rider from zero to hero while traversing the worlds of freeride, surf and foilboarding. Our Slingshot kites came with both the Compstick Guardian or Compstick Sentinel control bars. The bar design and other rigging is the same as the Compstick Sentinel (see above). Having also recently launched their new five strut big air kite, the Raptor, Slingshot were able to really look at splitting the Rally in two. Ri, A good reason to do your hotdogging on the way out, Featured in our fall 2020 issue, @matthias_larsen, Fins loose and funny faces with @matchu_lopes. It’s even crossed the Atlantic! Testers found the grip to be fairly dense with thin rubber ridges along the handle that make for a very aggressive yet solid grip.

The Rally has all the user-friendly characteristics of an all-around freeride kite that makes progression, general boosting and cruisey riding easy and fun. Being lower in aspect than both its predecessor and the new Raptor, the GT sits further back in the window, so is a bit more physical on the legs once the wind picks up and you move into the upper third of the kite’s wind range. Fred Hope pushing the limits on his Slingshot foil   Surely whatever is possible on a strapless board could be applied to a foil, right? The wingtips feature three settings for adjusting kite feedback with the stock setting located in the middle.

The Rally can be used with either the Compstick Guardian or Compstick Sentinel control bars.

Sizes Available: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14m Like most delta-shaped performance freeride kites, the Rally requires additional bar input to keep the kite off the water when hovering on the side of the window and when it comes to relaunch the Rally delivers an incredibly reliable and quick relaunch from the depth of the window while easily rolling onto a wingtip from the nose down position. The Rally features a Delta-C shape, tapered wingtips and fine-tuned three-point bridle system. We didn’t know anything about the Rally GT before we got hold of it, and were expecting a faster Rally, but no, this is an entirely new shape; now more rounded and with a compact ‘retro C’ shape canopy and stubby wing tips. Great range and depower, easy relaunch, solid upwind ability, predictable performance in gusty wind, lofty hang-time and solid crossover surf performance. The Rally loves to boost and more, with nice soft landings. It has also dropped from five struts to three, but of course is still obviously recognisable as a Slingshot, designed with the unmistakeable strength adding features, such as Split-Strut technology alongside the new ‘4×4’ canopy tech material. Testers did note that when you release the gate, there is a sharp edge on the handle that tends to pinch the finger on the tab.
Because the Rally has little in the way of wingtips, it does like to slide down the side of the window, so it does require a bit more input to maintain its position at the edge of either side of the window, this being a characteristic of delta designs. The quick release handle locks in the open position and resetting is fairly straight forward – simply place the end of the loop back into position and then depress a stainless steel tab that frees the release handle and locks the quick release back together. Dip the kite, sheet in and you have plenty of power and it’s very easy to continue generating or managing power as you ride along. www.slingshotsports.com/2018-Rally#.WkZ_5lQ-c1I. This bar uses Slingshot’s existing Guardian quick release system which puts the kite’s tuning below the bar, which allows surfers to increase the amount of throw/sheeting while still being able to reach the tuning of the kite. A super-accessible sheet-and-go kite with a very swept, bow- shape, it relaunched like a dream but was also very easy to jump with and, in the smaller sizes, was often used as a wave kite. More crucially for a kite like this that’s aimed at the intermediate market, in its low to mid range the GT is fun and really rewarding to jump with.

Send it back overhead and sheet in; you don’t have to be really precise and there’s decent lift and steady hangtime. The Compstick Sentinel features above the bar power tuning with single center-line safety depower, spectra sheeting/throw line with sliding stopper, adjustable length throw, tuning cleat power system with a toggle that uses a magnet to control excess tuning slack and a low V.
