the things we cannot say sparknotes

Aside from the love, the stories of WWII are always so sad but so important to remember what people went through during that horrific time and how resilient people can be.

What a book-I couldn’t put it down. I thought that Before I Let You Go was one of the best novels I had ever read…If you only have time to read one book this year The Things We Cannot Say should be that book. Editorial Review No editorial review at this time. Seamlessly, Rimmer is able to write about Alice’s undying love for Eddie & in conjunction shows the harsh realities day to day life often offers for those of us who love a child with ASD.

Something I wasn’t expecting but delightfully surprised. The Things We Cannot Say is a double timeline narrative, it is set both in the present day and in WWII Poland. Recommended to book clubs by 1 of 1 members. We get to meet and know Babcia (Grandmother) & we try to get to find the answers to her questions. And the love story - astounding!!!!!!

The Things We Cannot Say incorporates two novels in one with an impactful and gripping tale of two generations. The prologue commences in the Soviet Union during 1942 with Tomasz Slaski marrying Alina Dziak. Kelly Remmer did her research and managed to weave a story that is so beautiful and moving, I can’t stop recommending it to family and friends. The Things We Cannot Say is an unshakable reminder of the devastation when truth is silenced…and how it can take a lifetime to find our voice before we learn to trust it. Now fifteen and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married.

We are readers, bakers, cooks, podcast listeners & TV addicts. We already know, Eddie can’t say all the things he wishes to say. But for now, even deafening silence is preferable to grief. In 1942, Europe remains in the relentless grip of war. A while back, I remember hearing about a historical fiction book featuring a character diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a parent of a child with autism, I watch Netflix specials, television dramas, etc., and have never quite felt like they got my family situation. It’s a decision that will alter her destiny…and it’s a lie that will remain buried until the next century.Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz.

Thank you, Kelly!

I will do my best.

Kelly Rimmer writes a deeply meaningful novel about time, acceptance, understanding & the deeper meaning of unconditional love. Rimmer is careful not to jump back & forth too much. Where Alina used to measure time between visits from her beloved, now she measures the spaces between hope and despair, waiting for word from Tomasz and avoiding the attentions of the soldiers who patrol her parents’ farm.
