Not only did one family consisting of parents, their children and their children's spouses, grandchildren and babies born during the war survive, but they were the lucky few of only 300 survivors out of 30.000 slaughtered Jews in Poland's city of Radom. Interspersed in the story are short chronological events of the war that reflect on the families survival and are integral to understanding what happened in Poland.

This is one book that if done right will make a better movie. Hunter writes movingly from many different perspectives, and the only fault to find is that the number of characters — and her fidelity to the real story — can make the narrative confusing at times.
