What is not to love about this RPG? Because of the game's isometric vantage point from high above the main character's head, you couldn't really tell what was so special about the graphics at first. At the outset, there are three character classes to pick from: fighter, wizard, and archer. Myself and an IT guy at work were so excited about the new engine they were developing for. If you like D&D games and are up for some monster killing action, this is your game. I much preferred the original Baldurs Gate titles on the PC to this fare. The combat system was blessfuly simple and the magic look good. The visuals are flat out gorgeous with environments that are both intricately detailed and quite enormous...[though] it’s short for an RPG (about 11 Hours) even if its main focus is action. The game mechanics are easy, leaving you to focus on the puzzles, the high-adrenaline battles, and the lustful visuals. The graphics were a marvel to behold and the water will take your time up just jumping in to it. Slay even a pitiful monster such as one of the doglike kobolds you'll fight early on, and you'll see it tumble backward as its weapon, buckler, and helmet go clattering to the ground in different directions, and its foul blood stains the surroundings. Unfortunately, the visuals in the new GameCube port of Dark Alliance just don't measure up, mostly because it suffers from frame rate issues that are nonexistent in the PS2 version (or the new Xbox version). The game had incredible atmosphere, and its outstanding production values were a big part of what made Dark Alliance so enjoyable overall. RPG's are always at the top of my list. Inspired by AD&D, this marvelously detailed, richly atmospheric action-RPG is a ceaselessly entertaining example of how valuable highly focused, simplistic adventuring can really be. Beyond the visuals, you'll find that the gameplay of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is pretty simple but purely fun and addictive. You gain experience points as you defeat opponents, and you eventually gain experience levels that make you significantly more powerful and allow you to customize your character by spending points on all the various special abilities, feats, and spells that he or she can learn. Face a seemingly endless army of sinister enemies in over 80 levels of finger-numbing action. Now you must seek out the villains responsible for your sister's disappearance and exact your revenge. But even with the repetitiveness, i found the game a bit too short.

The initial search to root out these scoundrels ultimately leads your character on a quest to save the world, which, in practical terms, spans three unique lands and more than 28 unique game locations. It has tons of replay value but it only took me and a friend around 7hrs and some change to beat. With the stunning graphics, super-fun co-op mode, and intelligent and seamless interface, you won’t be worrying about the storyline until well after you’ve finished shooting fireballs at the last of the frost giants.
