Successfully funneling your opponent’s troops into a carefully curated ambush, or coming up with the perfect counter to a particular enemy charge is always deeply rewarding, and the diversity of mission setups keeps the experience interesting throughout. Battles very quickly transform to "slowly creep forward and win by attrition", which may have been novel in Advance Wars at the time, but is grating here. Choose your Commander and wage turn-based war on battling factions. There's a lot of modes, but really no incentive or drive to play any of them. The pixelated exterior houses surprisingly deep tactical gameplay that's easy to grasp but will soon give your grey matter a workout. If you are new and haven't played Advance Wars, the difficulty of this game will seem brutal at times. I loved Fire Emblem and The Banner Saga, amongst other strategy games, and found this unbearably boring. PS4.

Wargroove is a wonderful strategy game in the spirit of Advance Wars. Take command of your units, from squads of agile archers to mighty fire-breathing dragons, in this modern take on turn-based tactics. It is genuinely fun and ridiculously pretty to look at. The factions are pretty much the same, the art is boring, the gameplay is even worse than Fire Emblems made 10 or 15 years ago, be smart and don't play this, value yourself. I'm a veteran of turn based strategy and, on a few early levels, found myself defeated at least a few times. The storyline has a lot of heartwarming moments, the art style is bright and beautiful, the music is well-made, and it's clear that the developers poured a lot of love into every part of the game. Pursued by her foes, the only way to save her country is to travel to new lands in search of allies. Thankfully, the developers include options to turn down the difficulty without much of a penalty.
