With the end of an alphabet of adventures of the crew of MJN Air: Arthur (John Finnemore), Carolyn (Stephanie Cole), Martin (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Douglas (Roger Allam) drawing close, writer and star of the show, John Finnemore, spoke exclusively to Young Perspective about writing the series, the end of an era in his career and what Cabin Pressure fans can look forward to after Benedict Cumberbatch reads the credits for the last time on Christmas Eve. Maybe not necessarily improved the finished product, but certainly the road to getting there, I’ve learnt that if I’m sure of the plot, where it ends and that the end is satisfying, ideally it should be like a murder mystery and you should say ‘Of course, of course that’s how it ends – it seems natural now, but I didn’t see it coming’. How many hours writing approximately would you say it takes to generate a series?

And once I thought of that, it seemed like a perfect sitcom setting: it's got hierarchy, confined spaces, boredom (in a good way, hopefully), high stakes, a weekly 'mission' - all the stuff you need. Typically, Lawry and I will be doing a crossword, Margaret will be Skyping her kids, Simon will be at work on his cross-stitch of hedgerow flowers… and at the back of the bus, Carrie will be in her jacuzzi full of champagne, trying to drink vodka through a trumpet. Two main ways – performing as much as I could at university, at the Edinburgh festival, and then at little venues in London; and writing sketches on spec for current TV and radio sketch shows, and sending them to their producers. I was, yes, and it got really quite far down the development road - Richard Wilson doing a read-through in front of channel heads and everything. And I can always listen to the CDs that I own…the characters from Cabin Pressure are “family” now.
