Omega Nebula/Swan Nebula/M17 (ACS Full Field Image) Peering into a celestial maternity ward called the Omega Nebula or M17, images from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope revealed a watercolor fantasy-world of glowing gases, where stars and perhaps embryonic planetary systems are forming. usually measured in light-years.
Because these dense pockets are more resistant to the withering radiation than the surrounding cloud, they appear as sculptures in the walls of the cloud or as isolated islands in a sea of glowing gas. Hidden Treasures is an initiative to invite astronomy enthusiasts to search the Hubble archive for stunning images that have never been seen by the general public. This image, which looks uncannily like a labradorite crystal, is what the Swan Nebula looks like through the Hubble Space Telescope. The nebula, also called M17 and the Swan Nebula, resides 5,500 light-years away in the constellation …
The Omega Nebula, also known as the Swan Nebula, Checkmark Nebula, and the Horseshoe Nebula (catalogued as Messier 17 or M17 or NGC 6618) is an H II region in the constellation Sagittarius.
Stellar nurseries are some of the most photogenic regions in the universe. This stunning picture was taken by the newly installed Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. This infrared view from NASA’s Spitzer telescope reveals even more texture and activity in this busy region. Principal Astronomers: NASA and the ACS Science Team (H. Ford, G. Illingworth, M. Clampin, G. Hartig, T. Allen, K. Anderson, F. Bartko, N. Benitez, J. Blakeslee, R. Bouwens, T. Broadhurst, R. Brown, C. Burrows, . Located just beyond the tip of the tail of the constellation of Cygnus (The Swan), this butterfly-shaped cloud of glowing gas and dust is the wreckage of a star similar to the Sun. Supernova remnants are also considered to be a part of the emission nebulae class. One of the brightest and most massive star-forming regions in our galaxy, the Omega, or Swan, Nebula, came to resemble the shape resembling a swan's neck we see today only relatively recently. I find so much joy in attempting to capture these beautiful photographs. The area represents about 60 percent of the total view captured by ACS.
The center of the nebula is shrouded in a cloud of hydrogen gas, and the incredible blue and green hues of this photo reveal the oxygen … solar system are usually measured in Astronomical Units (AU). The RGB of the image was created using the FITS Liberator Color Composite action. I also used a surface blur along with a smart sharp filter. The IAAA is the world’s only guild of artists dedicated to creating images of space. This vast region of … Dean Salman & the ESA/ESO/NASA Photoshop FITS Liberator, Subscribe to the ESA/Hubble Science Newsletter, Step-by-step guide to making your own images, Black Holes, Quasars, and Active Galaxies. SOFIA Reveals How the Swan Nebula Hatched In this composite image of the Omega, or Swan, Nebula, SOFIAs view reveals evidence that parts of the nebula formed separately to create the swan-like shape seen today. WIRED is where tomorrow is realized.
The camera filters that were used in the science observations. It was discovered by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745. Go to the artist's portfolio. Photograph: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Penn State/DSS. Particularly striking is the rose-like feature, seen to the right of center, which glows in the red light emitted by hydrogen and sulfur. Exhibition include Swiss Embassy, Torpedo Factory, Pelican Bay Community Center, Naples Art Association and Rookery Bay
I processed the luminance using adjustment layers for curves, levels, and other processing methods.
Want more to ogle? Interstellar distances can also be measured in parsecs. Other dense pockets of gas have formed the remarkable feature jutting inward from the left edge of the image, which resembles the famous Horsehead Nebula in Orion. Objects like the Ring Nebula, Dumbbell Nebula, Veil Nebula, and the Crab Nebula are therefore prospective targets for narrowband imaging. The nebula, also called M17 and the Swan Nebula, resides 5,500 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. Join now! The physical distance from Earth to the astronomical object. At 74 years of age, I feel I am at my most creative time of life.
Born in 1944 in Washington, D.C., I have painted and sculpted most of my life. AURA’s Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, conducts Hubble science operations. ; ESA/Herschel; NASA/JPL-Caltech.

The color image is constructed from four separate images taken in these filters: blue, near infrared, hydrogen alpha, and doubly ionized oxygen.
The WIRED conversation illuminates how technology is changing every aspect of our lives—from culture to business, science to design. Resembling the fury of a raging sea, this image actually shows a bubbly ocean of glowing hydrogen gas and small amounts of other elements such as oxygen and sulfur. Recent observations from SOFIA identified nine proto-stars in the southern region, and discovered that the Swan’s shape is likely the result of a long-ago merger of two separate nebulas. X-rays are a result of the extremely high temperatures of the gas in NGC 7026. The breakthroughs and innovations that we uncover lead to new ways of thinking, new connections, and new industries. I really wanted to call this painting “The Birth of Darth Vader” because of the dark ominous looking hydrogen cloud in the middle, and because it reminds me of the flowing cape and helmet he wore. As a star’s source of nuclear fuel runs out, its outer layers are puffed out, leaving only the hot core of the star behind.
The physical size of the object or the apparent angle it subtends on the sky.
The area represents about 60 percent of the total view captured by ACS. The rotation of the image on the sky with respect to the north pole of the celestial sphere. They are in fact a relatively short-lived phenomenon that occurs at the end of the life of mid-sized stars.
It is the essential source of information and ideas that make sense of a world in constant transformation. NASA’s SOFIA telescope has been studying the famous Swan Nebula in order to better understand how this bird got its shape.

Lucasfilms' Doug Chiang and Amy Beth Christenson explain each and every type of starfighter from the Star Wars movie franchise. Blues and greens reveal oxygen atoms, as well as nitrogen, hydrogen, and sulfur. The image is 35 by 35 arcseconds. Combining the data from three different telescopes—Spitzer, Herschel and SOFIA—creates a composite image that reveals the nebula’s full complexity. Ad Choices, Space Photos of the Week: Swooning for the Swan Nebula. I started painting a series of "Nebula Art" in 2015 after seeing the Hubble Space Telescope images. The nebula’s center glows orange like a sea of fire, surrounded by dense clouds of hydrogen, the main stuff of stars. The luminance was H-Alpha in both images. ♀️ Want the best tools to get healthy?
